National Province Championship
Stewarton Heather represented Ayrshire in the National Province Championship played at Greenacres Ice Rink over the weekend. Alan Smith (Skip), David Reid, Alex Wilson and Douglas Reid were the players taking part.
With three games on Friday, draw one against East Lothian ended in a narrow 7-6 loss. In draw three against Upper Strathearn, steals in the first four ends gave Stewarton a 5-0 lead, which was converted to a 7-3 win. Four shots at both the first and fourth ends against Peebleshire saw the Stewarton close out a 12-4 win to end the day on 4 points.
A convincing 7-1 win over East of Fife in draw 7 left Stewarton 2nd in Pool B with one game to play. That game would be against Inverness and with both teams tied on six points, Stewarton had the advantage of winning three more ends. East Lothian, already on seven points, would take one of the two quarter final places. It would therefore be winner takes all between Stewarton and Inverness. The first five ends resulted in singles for the team with the hammer with Inverness leading 3-2. The breakthrough came in the sixth end where Stewarton scored 4 to pull 3 shots clear. Inverness were run out of stones in the seventh end and Stewarton progressed to a quarter final match against Dunbartonshire.
Unfortunately, on Sunday morning, the wheels came off. Up against the only rink to win all five round robin games, Stewarton were 8-1 down after four ends. That was the end of the road for Stewarton.
In the semi finals, the top two teams in Pool A, Dunbartonshire and Dumfriesshire, were beaten by the top two teams in Pool D, Scottish Central and Border. Although ta closer game that when the two teams met in the Pool match, the result was the same with Scottish Central taking the win 8-6.
