Inter-club v Galston & Haymouth

Galston & Haymouth 35 – 11 Stewarton Heather

Having allowed four key players to travel to Forfar for the Rink Championships (where they were beaten semi-finalists), it was a weakened team that travelled to Ayr for this annual Inter-club match. Despite the excuses, Stewarton Heather were roundly trounced on the day.

T Neil 11 – 5 D Mundell

This was definitely a game of two halves, with Mundell comfortably leading 5-2 at the halfway stage. In the second half, Tom Neil racked up nine unanswered shots to run out comfortable winners.

J Boswell 8 – 5 T Reid

This was another game where Stewarton’s Tom Reid opened a 5-2 lead after five ends. In the sixth, when faced with giving up a second consecutive steal, Jim Boswell played a hit and hope shot to come in off a wing and score a 3. With his tail up, Boswell then stole the next two ends against the despairing Tom Reid.

S Wilson 6 – 2 M Reid

This was a really tight game with neither side giving much away. After blanking the first end the next five ends went with hammer for a single at each end. With the score at 3-2 down, Michael Reid’s last stone over drew and tapped back an opposing stone. This stone tapped back Michael’s only counter and gave away a steal of 3 and the game.

A Boswell 10 – 1 H Reid

The last stone of the first end told the story that this game followed. Laying 2 down, Andrew Boswell’s attempted draw to the edge of the button was a touch heavy. Staying wide, the stone took a wick off a corner and rolled in to take the shot. Conceding a 4 in the second left Hugh chasing the game and, with Galston second Lucy Morton playing every shot asked of her, it just wasn’t happening for Hugh’s rink.

Inter Club v Riccarton

Stewarton Heather 19 – 7 Riccarton

This seasons inter club game against Riccarton CC was played at Greenacres on Tuesday evening. Representing Stewarton were the Cuthbertson League rinks of Hugh Reid and Tom Reid.

Tom Reid 5 – 6 Hugh Guthrie

This was a close game where, with the exception of the fifth end, there was only 1 shot between the teams throughout. Hugh opened with a single and Tom countered with a deuce. The teams then swapped singles before Tom stole a 1 in the fifth to lead 4-2. Hugh levelled the score with a deuce in the sixth and, keeping Tom to single in the seventh, took another deuce to win the game in the eighth.

Hugh Reid 13 – 2 Jim Wilson

In contrast, this game was much more one sided, with Hugh winning the first six ends. Opening with a 3, Hugh then stole a 6, followed by further steals of 2, 1, 1 & 2. Having scored his first 2 shots in the seventh, Jim conceded the game.

Inter Club v Kilmaurs

Stewarton Heather 24 – 11 Kilmaurs

The home leg of our annual inter-club match against Kilmaurs Glencairn was played at Greenacres last night.

Billy Jackson 9 – 7 Jamie McFadzean

A quick start for Billy saw the Stewarton rink open a 7 shot lead after two ends. Jamie’s Kilmaurs rink then found their rhythm and brought the game back to 7 each after seven ends. A deuce for Billy in the eighth saw the game across the line for a Stewarton win.

Stuart Smith 15 – 4 Gordon Shepherd

Stuart also got out of the blocks quickly with a 7 in the first end, and followed it with steals of 3, 2 and 1, before Gordon could reply. By the time Gordon scored a 3 in the seventh the game was over and the bar was calling.

Campbell Fuel Oils Trophy

With a combined score over the two legs of Stewarton 43 – Kilmaurs 25, Stewarton Heather retain the Campbell Fuel Oils trophy for another year.

Inter-Club v Dunlop

The annual inter-club match against Dunlop Curling Club was played on Wednesday 16th January.

Despite half of his team being unable to play, Dougie Reid pulled together a scratch team from the reserve list. Taking on the now familiar Dunlop rink, Dougie’s team played well together and were 11-1 up after 5 ends. At this point the Dunlop skip wanted to call it a day but was persuaded to play another where they scored a 2 before calling it a day.

Stewarton Heather 11 – 3 Dunlop

Inter-Club v Kilmaurs

Kilmaurs 14 – 19 Stewarton Heather

The away leg of our annual inter-club match against Kilmaurs Glencairn was played at the Galleon last night.

G Shepherd 12 – 9 J Young

Take away the first and last ends and Jim Young would have won this game 9-3. However, this is an eight end game and giving up 4 at the first and 5 at the last was where the game was lost.

J McFadzean 2 – 12 M Noble

In the other game Malcolm Noble’s team were too strong for Kilmaurs’ Jamie McFadzean. Winning 6 ends and allowing the opposition to take singles in the first and fifth was the story.

With only 5 shots in it, this sets up an interesting return leg at Greenacres on January 23rd.
