A message from our President Jim Kirkwood

Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen, on this night which was supposed to be our AGM of Stewarton Heather Curling Club, I would like to take the opportunity to say a few words.
After a season, which is arguably one of the most successful in the history of the club, we should be out celebrating our success, but because of “lock down” we have to stay at home and stay safe!
I hope you are all well , and whether you are furloughed, key worker, or simply in lockdown at home, that you have good health and are managing to cope with this pandemic.
At present we do not know what curling will be in the future although we are planning next season as we would usually do.
So I would just like to wish you all good health, stay safe and hopefully we’ll manage to reorganise the AGM for later in the year.
? Jim Kirkwood

Waltham Bonspiel

Stewarton Heather have the great honour of being invited annually to this great event due to our unique relationship with Waltham. Would any of our male members fancy curling in the U.S.A? If so get in touch with President Jim as soon as possible, we are hoping to send 1 or maybe even 2 teams if there is enough interest. Tom Reid, Dougy Reid, Robert Reid and Robert Whiteford were there the last time if you want any confirmation how good an opportunity this is.

Howie Cup – Match Day 2

The second round of games in the Wm. Howie Cup ended in two big wins and two tight results.

Hugh Reid 9 – 3 Tom Reid

Hugh got back on the winning trail in this battle of the older generation Reid brothers. Having given up a four in the second Tom’s front end were having an off day. Throughout the game Tom was often playing to get out of trouble, giving up five singles in the process.  In response, Tom only managed to score in the first and sixth ends.

Douglas Reid 9 – 7 Peter Barrett

With the pick of the nights subs playing at lead and second, Dougie kept building big ends. Continually trying to keep the score down, Peter managed to get to peels after four ends at three each. In the fifth, Dougie finally managed to build a head and lay four. His draw for a fifth shot was heavy and a big relief to Peter. In the eighth, an errant takeout by Dougie allowed Peter to square the game at seven each. In the ninth, lying one down Peter’s last draw came up short leaving Dougie to draw for two and game.

Jim Kirkwood 6 – 5 David Mundell

Big Davy took a slim advantage with a steal in the second, but this game was close throughout. With singles being the score of choice, Jim levelled the game with the first two in the seventh. One down in the ninth, lying second shot, Jim had a hit and stick to win the game. Having removed the target Jim’s stone headed for the edge of the rings, just clinging on to score two and take the win.

Craig Reid 11 – 3 James Whiteford

With Jimuk heading off to France for a weeks skiing, Alan Mitchell was left to take on Craig Reid. Opening up a four shot lead after three ends, Craig allowed Alan to come back with a three in the fourth. Unfortunately for Alan, that was to be his one and only score of the evening, with Craig adding seven shots in the last four ends.

Ayrshire Province Medal

The annual Province Medal was played at Ayr Ice Rink on Tuesday evening. The competition winners are the club with the highest combined scores over the two games against different clubs.

Stewarton Heather 7 – 9 Symington

In the first session David Reid, David Mackenzie, Jim Kirkwood and Robert Whiteford took on Symington. In the last end with one Symington stone to play, Stewarton Heather were lying shot, well guarded, thinking they had done enough to win the game. Unfortunately, Symington had other ideas and played a double runback takeout to win the gam by two shots.

Stewarton Heather 5 – 3 Ayr Country Club

In the second session, David Mundell, James Whiteford, Peter Barrett and Billy Jackson took on Ayr Country Club. Starting with three steals, (1, 2 & 1), big Davy thought that giving up a one in the fourth was ok. Plans to build a big end in the fifth, did not go to plan nor did it happen in the sixth. Instead, the Country Club stole singles in each end. A single in the seventh gave Stewarton Heather a two shot win and an overall shots up score of 0.

Overall Result

Dundonald Curling Club won the Province Medal with a score of +17. Stewarton Heather finished seventh overall.

Finnie Kettle

Hosted by Dundonald Curling Club, the Finnie Kettle is a competition played by clubs representing the north and south of the river Irvine. The winning club being the highest up rink on the winning team.

As usual, Stewarton Heather was represented by a Presidents Select (usually committee members) made up of President Jim Kirkwood, Cuthbertson Reserve Coordinator James Whiteford, Secretary Peter Barrett and  Cuthbertson league leader Hugh Whiteford.

Drawn against Dundonald, a tight game ensued with Stewarton Heather having the better of the first half and Dundonald coming back towards the end of the game. With Dundonald lying one and guarded, Hugh’s last stone was an attempted raised takeout which unfortunately missed by a matter of millimetres giving Dundonlad the point needed to peel the game at 5 each.

In the overall competition, the North scored 42 shots to the South’s 46. The highest up rink for the South was Troon Portland who beat Riccarton by 7 shots and took home the trophy for the second year running.

Eglinton Jug Winners 2018

After three days of curling, the Stewarton Heather rink of David Mundell, David Reid, Tom Reid and Douglas Reid have again won the prestigious Eglinton Jug at Ayr Ice Rink.

Having reached the quarter finals with wins over Land o Burns and Sorn 3, Mundell’s rink came up against fellow Stewarton Heather rink of Craig Reid and, in the words of David himself “we were lucky to win the game.”

The semi-final was against Sorn 1 where Mundell took early control of the match and won 7-2 to set up the final against yet another Sorn rink of Neil Sands (Sorn 4). All square at 2-2 after 4 ends, Mundell took a 5-2 lead in the 5th. Sands took 1 in the 6th and stole another in the 7th to make it 5-4 going into the 8th, where Mundell secured another shot to win 6-4.

This was Team Mundell’s fifth win (2007, 2009, 2012, 2015 & 2018) and the clubs eighth overall (1901, 1987 & 1992).

Well done to all three Stewarton Heather rinks that took part in this years event.
